As a homeowner you’ve seen plenty of options for what you can do with your yard with hardscaping. From patios to fire pits to outdoor kitchens, hardscape products allow you to make your space more functional, pedestrian-friendly, and appealing to the eye. But every once in a while we like to showcase unique projects that use our hardscape products to create something simply fun.
We’ve seen customers create enormous chess boards with our 24″ x 24″ Vancouver Bay architectural slabs and basketball courts with Roman Cobblestone pavers, but this was the first time we have seen a bocce ball court.
The first known reference to bocce ball dates as far back as 5,200 BC, where it was found on a painting inside an Egyptian tomb. Historians know that over the centuries the game spread through the Middle East and Adriatic region, eventually blossoming in Greece and then Italy and France. Originally considered a sport for the nobles, bocce ball eventually became a sport for the masses in 1519 in both Belgium and Holland. It is estimated that over 25 million people play bocce ball around the globe, including one million in the United States.
Using Mutual Materials’ 4″ x 8″ x 12″ TuscanStone retaining wall blocks, Dreamscapes was able to create a full, regulation size bocce ball court in Olympia, Washington. With their modular size, TuscanStone can be stacked in a variety of ways, allowing the installer to achieve their desired look. TuscanStone comes in two additional sizes (4″ x 8″ x 4″ and 4″ x 8″ x 8″) providing the flexibility to do more intricate designs with their project.
Of course, this project was just one example of how hardscape products don’t have to be used for just patios and retaining walls. If you have the creative mind, you can really use hardscaping to create different projects that can serve as a focal point to be enjoyed by your family and guests.
