REACH Community Development’s mission is to create quality, affordable housing for individuals, families, and communities to thrive. Since 1982, REACH has operated as a non-profit in Portland, Oregon, addressing complex challenges facing the affordable housing industry. Recently they have made concerted efforts to align sustainability and livability for those they help. REACH has found housing for over 3,500, including seniors, people with disabilities, and veterans in over 2,700 homes.
When REACH partnered with Ankrom Moisan Architects to create their new complex, Gray’s Landing in southwest Portland, they envisioned a community of high-quality, sustainable affordable housing consisting of 209 units. The result was a 245,000 square foot, LEED Platinum mixed-use development with retail on the first floor, a landscaped courtyard on the second floor, and the new administrative offices for REACH.
Completed in 2012, Gray’s Landing was the first affordable housing development on the south waterfront of the Willamette River providing affordable housing to households earning 60% of the median family income. Forty-two of the units are designated for veterans.
Named after Portland philanthropist, John Gray, Ankrom Moisan used highly efficient, locally-sourced materials and daylighting strategies to create an inspiring place that’s healthy for people and the planet. Each unit has large, operable energy-efficient windows in the living room, bedrooms, and kitchens.
Mutual Materials was thrilled to be a part of the project, supplying the brick as well as the architectural slabs for the courtyard. A color combination of Red, Ginger, and Tan 24″ x 24″ Vancouver Bay architectural slabs were used to give the courtyard a unique vibrant palette to provide a relaxing environment for residents.
B&B Tile & Masonry was both the masonry and hardscape contractor for the project.
